Practicing Beyond the Mat

As we move through April, I’ve been reflecting on how yoga doesn’t stop when we roll up the mat — in many ways, that’s where the real practice begins.

Over the Easter break, I had planned a holiday with my family. As it turned out, life had other plans. My son became unwell, and alongside that, I realised I had made a mistake with our tickets. The trip didn’t happen.

In the moment, it would have been easy to resist what was unfolding — to feel frustrated or stuck in “what should have been.” But yoga gently reminds us of a different way.

Sometimes things don’t go to plan. Our practice teaches us to meet those moments as they are, rather than how we wish them to be. Not passive resignation, but a steady, grounded acceptance.

We all make mistakes. Part of the practice is softening towards ourselves — letting go of self-judgment and choosing understanding instead.

When plans fall away, something else quietly opens. By releasing our grip on what we expected, we make room for something new — even if it’s simply rest, perspective, or a slower pace.

Yoga asks us to stay adaptable — to move with life rather than against it. Change isn’t always comfortable, but it often brings unexpected opportunities.

During this time, I asked a fellow teacher and friend from my training to cover my classes. She was genuinely happy for the opportunity, and it felt good to step back and offer that space to someone else. There’s something powerful in sharing — in trusting, supporting, and allowing others to step forward.

As we continue this month, I invite you to notice where these themes show up in your own life:

Where can you soften?

Where can you create more space?

Where might you offer or receive support?
