Nurturing Ourselves for a Day Inspired by Harold Offeh's 4 Ways to Feel Amazing.

A few months ago, I visited an exhibition at Kettle's Yard featuring the work of Harold Offeh. One video, titled 4 Ways to Feel Amazing (2002), stood out. In it, Offeh explored the idea of "nurture ourselves for a day." This simple yet profound concept invites us to pause, care for ourselves intentionally, and rediscover what makes us feel truly alive. Inspired by this, I want to share practical ways to nurture yourself for a day.

Creating a space for yourself is the first step to nurturing your well-being.

Why Nurturing Ourselves Matters

In our busy lives, self-care often takes a backseat. We rush through days, juggling work, family, and obligations, leaving little room to recharge. Yet, nurturing ourselves is essential for mental, emotional, and physical health. It helps reduce stress, improve mood, and boost resilience. You can not pour from and empty cup!

Nurturing doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. It can be a focused day dedicated to simple acts that restore balance and joy. This approach encourages mindfulness and presence, helping us reconnect with our needs and desires.

Four Ways to Feel Amazing and How to Apply Them

Here’s how you can bring these ideas into your day:

1. Move Your Body with Intention

As we know with our Yoga classes movement is a powerful way to nurture both body and mind. Focusing on how your body feels during the movement, noticing sensations and breath can bring you back to the present moment and to yourself.

Also a 20- 30 minute walk in a nearby park or along the river can do wonders, shift your energy, clear your mind and lift your spirits.

Moving with intention helps release tension and increases energy.

2. Engage Your Senses

Engaging your senses grounds you in the present moment and enhances pleasure.

  • Take the time to prepare a simple meal with fresh ingredients for you.

  • Listen to music that uplifts or calms you.

  • Spend time outdoors in Nature noticing the sounds, sights, and smells around you.

Also just taking the time and allowing yourself to be fully present while brewing a cup of tea and drinking it slowly can be a nurturing ritual and creates a small "breathing space" for yourself.

3. Connect with Others or Yourself

Nurturing can mean connecting deeply, whether with others or with yourself.

  • Reach out to a friend or family member for a meaningful conversation.

  • Write in a journal to explore your thoughts and feelings.

  • Practice meditation or mindfulness to deepen your relationship with yourself.

Human connection, presence and deep listening are all nurturing acts.

4. Create Something

Creativity nurtures the soul. Engaging in creative acts can be healing and joyful.

  • Try drawing, painting, or crafting without pressure to produce something perfect.

  • Write poetry, stories, or even a letters.

  • Rearrange a space in your home, or in your Garden

The act of creating helps express emotions and can bring a sense of accomplishment and calm.

Planning Your Nurture Day

To make the most of nurturing yourself for a day, consider these steps:

  • Set aside time: Choose a day or half-day when you can minimize distractions.

  • Limit technology use: Reduce screen time to focus on your experience.

  • Be flexible: Let your needs guide you rather than sticking rigidly to a schedule.

  • Reflect: At the end of the day, note what activities made you feel best and how you can incorporate them regularly.

Real-Life Examples of Nurturing Days

Many people find that dedicating time to nurture themselves leads to lasting benefits.

Nature Retreat: A day spent hiking or walking in a nearby forest or nature reserve, taking breaks to sit quietly and breathe deeply. These will help you feeling calmer and more connected to yourself afterward.

Creative Morning: set aside a morning to paint, draw or create something while listening to some music. These experience helps to process stress and sparked new ideas.

Digital Detox: phone and computer off for a day or half day, focusing on cooking, reading, and journaling. These can improve your sleep and mood.

Center on intentional care.

Tips for Making Nurturing a Habit

While a dedicated day is powerful, nurturing yourself regularly keeps well-being strong.

  • Schedule short breaks daily for mindful breathing, stretching or re-alignment.

  • Keep a small journal to jot down moments of joy or gratitude (maybe before bed).

  • Create mini rituals like a morning cup of tea or evening reading time.

  • Practice saying no to commitments that drain your energy.

  • Surround yourself with supportive people who respect your need for care.

Building these habits helps you stay balanced even during busy times.

Nurture yourself for a day- by Harold Offeh

Do you treat yourself in a caring way?

Do you love and encourage yourself?

Do you help yourself up when you fall and comfort yourself when you are sad?

Do you forgive yourself when you make a mistake?

We find it so difficult to treat ourselves in this loving and nurturing way.

Decide to nurture yourself for a day and see how it goes>

Let every thought and action support you and say the following affirmation to yourself:

"I deserve Love and Care"

Nurture yourself for a day and the habit may grow.
